Disaster Medicine Classes for Postgraduate Students of the “Extreme Medicine and Travel Medicine” Program – February 14, 2026
On February 14, 2026, staff from the Department of Disaster Medicine and Emergency Care at the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University Medical College conducted classes for participants of the “Extreme Medicine and Travel Medicine” postgraduate program.
The classes focused on disaster medicine, with particular emphasis on CBRNE threats (chemical, biological, radiation, nuclear, and explosive). During the classes, key elements of medical management in these situations were discussed.

Particular attention was paid to the elements of clinical care for patients exposed to a CBRNE agent, including the principles of initial assessment of the injured person’s condition, the specific clinical presentation depending on the type of threat, and the basic guidelines for treatment. Another important module of the course covered issues related to personal protective equipment for medical personnel – its selection, safe donning and doffing, and practical limitations in mass casualty incidents. Organizational aspects of medical support for CBRNE events were also discussed, including patient isolation, principles of medical transport, the basics of detection and identification of hazardous agents in the context of cooperation with other services, and modern decontamination principles. The course was a practical workshop, aimed at increasing awareness of threats and preparing participants to take action in high-risk situations.
