On May 21-23, 2026, Katarzyna Długosz, M.A., from the Department of Disaster Medicine and Emergency Care at the Faculty of Medicine, Jagiellonian University Medical College, participated in the 27th Congress of the Polish Diabetes Association in Wrocław. The PTD Congress annually brings together specialists in diabetology, internal medicine, endocrinology, family medicine, pediatrics, health sciences, and specialists in modern medical technologies and healthcare organization design. The event discussed current trends in diabetes diagnosis and treatment, new glucose monitoring technologies, the potential for individualized therapy, and the challenges associated with preventing acute and chronic complications of the disease. Issues related to the safety of insulin therapy, the use of continuous glucose monitoring systems, and the role of clinical data analysis in improving the quality of patient care.
During the conference, Katarzyna Długosz, M.A., presented a scientific poster on emergency medical team interventions related to hypoglycemia in patients with type 1 diabetes in Poland from 2018 to 2024. The paper was co-authored with Julia Pelczar from the University of Warsaw.
The presented study was based on the analysis of data from medical records of emergency medical team procedures. The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of hypoglycemia episodes and identify factors associated with the risk of severe hypoglycemia. The results indicate that severe hypoglycemia should not be viewed solely as a single clinical incident, but also as a significant systemic problem. The observed relationships may be important for planning preventive measures, patient education, the organization of diabetes care, and the development of solutions supporting the earlier recognition of hypoglycemia risk. This work aligns with current trends in diabetology, in which personalized treatment, continuous glucose monitoring, data analysis, and collaboration between specialist care and the emergency medical system play an increasingly important role.
The poster presentation was also an important element in promoting interdisciplinary research conducted at the Department of Disaster and Emergency Medicine at the Jagiellonian University Medical College and confirmed the growing role of systemic data analysis in improving patient safety. The presentation generated significant interest from attendees, confirming that it represents an important step towards further research on the use of medical data to improve the safety of diabetes therapy and the development of modern, integrated models of patient care.
