Participation in mass casualty incident exercises – S52 Tunnel

On 8.11.2024, the team from the Department of Disaster Medicine and Emergency Care of the Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow took part in exercises simulating rescue operations in a mass casualty incident. The exercises took place in the “Batowice” road tunnel, which is part of the Krakow Northern Bypass under construction on the S-52 road. Thanks to the invitation of the Krakow Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service, they actively participated in the exercise as medical arbitrators. The thematic scope of the exercise concerned rescue, medical and technical operations performed during a mass casualty incident on expressways. The activities were carried out based on the forces and resources of the Krakow Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service, including the Specialist Technical Rescue Group, the Medical Rescue Group and the unmanned aerial vehicle service team. The field hospital staff consisted of doctors, nurses and paramedics from the 5th WSzK in Krakow. Participation in the exercise was another valuable experience for all emergency services scheduled to respond to real mass casualty incidents.
